Lebanon: The Pearl of the Middle East
Location: Middle East.
Total Area:10,450 sq km.
Population:~4 million .
Capita:Beirut
on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean sea.
It is bordered by Syria to the north and east, and by Palestine to the south. Highest summit is Mount Hermon at 2814 metres.

Lebanon's highest peak Qornet Es-Sauda at 3090 metres.

Brief history:

Lebanon earliest settlers were the Phoenicians who came from the Arabian Peninsula around 3,500 BC. They established cities at Beirut, Byblos,Tyre, Sidon, and Baalbek and spread their 22-letter Phoenician alphabet throughout the region.became part of the Roman Empire in 64 BC when Pomey the Great conquered the territory that comprises modern Lebanon and governed it as part of the province of Syria.

In 1516 when the Ottoman Turks conquered the entire eastern Mediterranean coast, Lebanon became part of the Ottoman Empire. After World War I, Lebanon became a French mandate.It remained under French mandate until 1943, when Lebanon became fully independent.

Wars:

In the summer of 1975 all-out civil war broke out , and it ended at fall 1989.

in 1978 Israel invaded southern Lebanon in an attempt to eliminate Palestinian bases, who took refugee in Lebanon since 1954. Withdrawing three months later after a United nations peacekeeping force was sent to the area, they reinvaded in 1982, occupying Beirut and forcing the PLO to evacuate its head quarters. For seven weeks the Israelis relentlessly bombed Beirut by air, sea and land.a year Later they withdraw till the south and since then they formed a buffer zone in southern Lebanon.

in April 18 1996 Israel comitted a masacre in Qana (south of Lebanon), killing 150 people and injuring 300 others.
